Function
Due to their natural tooth-like features, crowns restore the full function of your missing or damaged tooth. Crowns restore your ability to chew.
Used to strengthen and improve the appearance of teeth that are broken or decaying, crowns can often be completed in two simple visits. Crowns can be used on one tooth or your entire set of teeth to brighten your smile and improve the function of your teeth. Crowns not only improve the look of your teeth but will also reduce pain in damaged teeth and help prevent further damage. Crowns are also durable: Dental crowns should last between five to fifteen years, depending on how you care for them. The following are the benefits of a dental crown:

Due to their natural tooth-like features, crowns restore the full function of your missing or damaged tooth. Crowns restore your ability to chew.

A crown can keep a cracked tooth together and prevent or delay having to have a tooth extracted by your dentist.

A crown can cover up a stained or unusually shaped tooth, adding to your self-confidence and giving you a nicer smile.
At Janz Family Dental, we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Depending on the location of your tooth and your aesthetic goals, we offer several high-quality materials to restore your smile:
These are the gold standard for front teeth. They provide the most natural look by mimicking the translucency of real tooth enamel and can be custom-shaded to match your surrounding teeth perfectly.
By fusing porcelain to a metal substructure, these crowns offer a balance of aesthetic beauty and long-lasting durability. They’re a popular choice for both front and back teeth.
Known for its incredible strength and chip resistance, zirconia is an excellent option for patients who grind their teeth or for molars that endure heavy chewing forces.
While less common for visible teeth, gold alloys are exceptionally biocompatible and require the least amount of natural tooth removal. They’re often recommended for molars where maximum strength is needed.

Receiving a dental crown is typically a two-appointment process. The first appointment consists of preparing the tooth to receive the crown by shaving down the outside of the tooth. Your dentist will also take impressions for the permanent crown, fabricate a temporary crown and send the impressions off to the lab to make the permanent crown.
During the second appointment, the temporary crown is removed, and the permanent crown is installed on the tooth with dental cement.

We prioritize your comfort at every stage. Whether you are receiving a single crown or a dental bridge to replace missing teeth, the process typically follows these steps:
Preparation: We begin by numbing the area with a local anesthetic. Our team then carefully reshapes the tooth (or anchor teeth for a bridge) to ensure a secure fit for the restoration.
Digital or Traditional Impressions: We take extremely accurate impressions of your teeth. Many of our patients actually opt for our same-day crown technology, which uses digital scanning to create your crown right here in our West Edmonton office.
Temporary Placement: If a dental lab is crafting your restoration, we’ll place a comfortable temporary crown or bridge to protect your teeth and maintain your smile while you wait.
Final Fitting & Bonding: Once your custom restoration is ready, we check the fit, bite alignment, and colour. After ensuring it meets our high standards (and yours!), we permanently cement it into place, instantly restoring your tooth’s function.

A dental crown is a long-term investment in your oral health. To avoid damaging a dental crown and ensure it lasts for 15+ years, follow these essential dental crown aftercare tips:
The First 24 Hours Avoid very sticky or hard foods—such as taffy or ice—while the permanent cement fully sets and reaches maximum strength.
Protect the Tooth Beneath While your crown itself cannot develop decay, the natural tooth underneath still can. Brush twice daily and floss gently around the gumline to prevent plaque buildup at the margin—the area where the crown meets your tooth.
Guard Against Grinding If you clench or grind your teeth, especially at night, talk to us about a custom night guard. This simple, protective appliance can help prevent chipping or damage to your porcelain crown.
Stay Consistent with Professional Care Routine checkups and cleanings at Janz Family Dental allow us to monitor your crown’s condition and ensure the surrounding gum tissue remains healthy.

Yes, dental crowns are often used to protect and restore a tooth after a root canal. They provide strength and stability to the treated tooth, helping to preserve its function and appearance.
Traditional dental crown placement process typically involves two appointments over a few weeks. The first visit includes tooth preparation and impressions and placing a temporary crown. The final visit involves fitting and cementing the custom-made crown.
For both dental crowns and bridges, regular hygiene visits and good oral hygiene help to prevent decay from getting under the crown and increase life span.

Dental crowns can last 10 to 15 years or longer with proper care. However, they may require replacement due to normal wear and tear, changes in bite, or other dental issues. Regular dental visits can help monitor their condition.
Dental crowns cannot be whitened like natural teeth. It’s important to choose the shade of your crown to match your surrounding teeth. If you are considering teeth whitening, it’s best to do so before getting a crown.
While dental crowns are durable, our dentists advise avoiding very hard or sticky foods that could damage or dislodge the crown. Chewing on ice or hard candies should also be avoided to prevent damage.
